GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Dosimetrist is responsible for developing computer generated radiation dose distributions, calculating radiation dose treatment times or monitoring unit settings to deliver prescribed radiation to a defined tumor volume as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. A the direction of the Dosimetry Manager, and on a regular basis, the Dosimetrist will conduct quality assurance reviews, conduct quality checks on various equipment.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Graduate of medical dosimetry school, experience preferred, but not required or a graduate of hospital or college affiliated medical dosimetry school with clinical and classroom curriculum for duration of one year required.

Certification as a Medical Dosimetrist by the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists required within 3 years of becoming a Medical Dosimetrist.

DUTIES

  • Works directly with physician in verification simulation, treatment planning procedures, and patient specific radiation dose  measurements, including all electronic documentation, charting and coding in Mosaiq and patient EMR.
  • Assists Medical Physicist in calibration of equipment and radioactive sources.
  • Develops computerized treatment plan, calculates treatment doses and / or monitor unit setting to deliver dose to a tumor volume as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.
  • Follows the dose prescription radiation dose to a defined tumor volume.
  • Calculates and documents dose in patients’  IMPAC electronic treatment records.
  • Verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
  • Performs computerized planning of external beam treatments.
  • Assists in the selection, planning, fabrication and quality review and approval of treatment devices to aid in beam deliver modification.
  • Assists in the planning, production and quality review and approval of immobilization devices and other treatment aids.
  • Provides technical assistance to the Therapeutic Radiological Physicist in radiation protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibrations and quality assurance of the radiation therapy equipment.
  • Assists in the application of special dosimetry methods, devices, and techniques.
  • Assists in intra-cavitary and interstitial sealed source procedures.
  • Performs weekly quality assurance checks of radiotherapy treatment charts.
  • Follows all policies and procedures established for the accurate, timely and effective development and QA of all dosimetry responsibilities
  • Responsible for thorough, and timely documentation and coding of work in the EMR and IMPAC Mosaiq
  • Implement and assist in the maintenance of the Quality System for Medical Dosimetry and record keeping.
  • Utilize and document activities associated with the ProCure Training and Development Center’s treatment planning helpdesk.
  • Participate in all internal Dosimetry and multidisciplinary meeting at the center, focusing on continuous quality improvement and measureable feedback to the TDC.
  • Participates in Quality Check List as source of intra-center communication.
  • May act as teacher instructor during orientation phases of new dosimetry hires.
  • Insures that all procedures are followed, verified and QA’d as they relate to the outsourcing or treatment devices, acceptance of said devices and the center, and implementation of said devices during patient treatment.
  • Adhere to treatment protocol standards established by ProCure for specific disease sites/stages/fields, and assure that documentation is thorough and captured electronically.
  • Participate in the development and/or implementation of new techniques as assigned by Dosimetry manager.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES

  • Technical problem solving.
  • Provide excellent care for all patients, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation or religion.
  • Ability to work flexible hours if needed.
  • Ability to travel for educational / training purposes.
  • Excellent computer skills, including use of IMPAC or Varis record & verify, Excel, Word, and Outlook.  PeopleSoft a plus.
  • Teaching and coaching skills.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 40 lbs of equipment.
  • Physical ability to reach 5 feet above the floor.
  • Able to sit at a computer for entire shift if required.
  • Keyboard / mouse dexterity.
  • Good vision and hearing.
ENVIRONMENT OF WORK

Exposures to hazardous risks include radiation exposure (under the ALARA principle), potential exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment and chemicals.  Potential for bodily injury due to lifting.  Required to follow universal precautions.  Exposure to cleaning / sterilization agents.   Hazards will be minimal if proper safety precautions are utilized.  Work is mainly performed in an area with no natural light, and in close proximity to other team members. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • May provide supervision to new employees during orientation, and/or dosimetry interns/students.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Reports any process improvement opportunities to Dosimetry Manager.
  • Informs Dosimetry Manager of required resources for budgeting purposes.
  • Conserves and preserves center resources.

OTHER

  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Every ProCure employee is responsible for the up-keep and maintenance of the facility.
